Finding peace in the mountains

Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves. –John Muir

I remember our trip to the Canadian Rockies vividly. It was 2007, and I was reluctant to go. I was restless. Edgy. So much work to be done. So little time. But my family talked me into it. I had not taken a vacation in years, much less a family trip. And so I went. I’m so glad that I did.

I marveled at the beauty surrounding me. Deep blue lakes. Snow capped peaks. Cerulean skies. My pulse slowed. My mind emptied. I felt at peace for the first time in many moons. Things that seemed difficult became easy, and I saw with absolute clarity what matter and what did not. That’s when I understood that sometimes you need to step away from your routine to truly gain perspective.

This picture taken in the Banff/Jasper National Parks region will forever remind me of this experience.
