Apparently we don’t need teachers that badly

So you always hear in the news that we have a shortage of teachers, that most of the teachers are retiring, and that there are all sort of programs to get people into teaching, etc. Oh but wait…we don’t want just any old teachers, only “qualified” ones. Hey, beggars can’t be choosers!

We don’t need any more barriers to teaching. It’s already a tough sell to get people to consider teaching – low pay, long hours, student disciplinary problems, domineering or absentee parents, and under-appreciation. Now the No Child Left Behind Act requires that teachers be “qualified.” Oh, did I mention that teaching certification can cost thousands of dollars and is often non-transferable between states? As if teaching in one state would really be that different in another state.

Recruiting would be much easier if teaching was desirable rather than a labor of love. This means more administrative support for teachers in cases of disciplinary problems, an expeditiously process for removing bad teachers, and higher pay. Yes, we want quality teachers, but setting higher standards alone only further alienates potential candidates.

Of course, it’s much easier to mandates standards than address the real problems, right?
