God of War
By: Phil O. Safari on Mar 31 2009Category: Story
On the brink of destruction, the world desperately needs a Hero. Phil Safari, a reluctant Candidate, must prove himself worthy to the gods by completing a Heroic Task: change 1000 lives for the better… or else! The following is part of the Safaris – a collection of Phil’s misadventures in Heroism. Find out how it all started and what he has learned about love, life, and the pursuit of happiness.
“Kratos, do not do this.”
“Get out of my way, Athena! Zeus is the one I want, and nothing will stop me.”
“He will destroy you. You cannot hope to defeat the king of all gods. I cannot bear to see that.” Athena turned from Kratos, overcome with emotion.
“ Your ploy will not work, Athena! I am in no mood for such nonsense. Now, out of my way!” Kratos pushed past Athena, and she clutched at him.
“Noooo, Kratos! I love you!”
“Philkilles” laughed so hard that he cried. OMG, this is so @#$%ing bad, he thought. The writers must have lost their marbles.
The screen frozen, and Philkilles cursed as he thrashed the controller wildly. Shit, not again! It had taken him hours to replaying this level after the freak power outage. Suddenly, the figures on the screen expand, and Philkilles stared in disbelief as Athena came through his TV into his living room.
Athena laughed, and Philkilles turned away in disgust.
“Damn you, Athena! That wasn’t funny.”
“Come now, Phil. It was hilarious. Did you seriously think I would fall for an ogre like Kratos? Please.”
“What do you want, Athena? I don’t have time for your games.”
“Obviously. You are too busy with your own games.” Athena grew serious. “Time is growing short, and you are so close to finishing. Why not buckle down and push to the end?”
“Because I’m tired of this BS? I’ve toiled for ten @#$%ing years, and what do I get? Nothing but grief. Zeus can fry my ass if he wants; I quit. We all die someday – might as well go out with a bang. Now if you will excuse me, I’ve got some business to finish.”
“You are not a quitter, Phil, and you know it. How about trying a different approach? Rather than throwing yourself at people, find something that better matches your abilities. There are many ways to help without becoming cannon fodder.”
“Gee, Athena, thanks for the brilliant insight so late in the game. Like I really have time to start all over. If you really want to help, do something concrete like help me win a lottery. Otherwise, shut the hell up, and leave me alone!”
“You want to wallow in your misery? Fine. But Zeus won’t just sit and watch you waste time. Or did you think that ‘power outage’ was natural?”
“Get out! Just GTFO!”
