On the brink of destruction, the world desperately needs a Hero. Phil Safari, a reluctant Candidate, must prove himself worthy to the gods by completing a Heroic Task: change 1000 lives for the better… or else! The following is part of the Safaris – a collection of Phil’s misadventures in Heroism. Find out how it all started and what he has learned about love, life, and the pursuit of happiness.
“‘All we can do is pray?’ My, my…how ungodly of you.” Ares materialized behind me and put his hands on my shoulders. “You’re slipping, dear sister. Once you would have spotted me a mile away.”
I turned to face him, shrugging off his loathsome hands. “We are little different from these mortals. Given our predicament, we could certainly use a little divine intervention, wouldn’t you say?”
“A ridiculous conjecture that I utter reject,” scoffed Ares. “We are gods. The presence of other gods neither reduces our status nor necessitates the existence of a higher god.”
“I’m sure you did not come here to engage in a philosophical debate. What do you want, Ares?”
“Why, to see the fruits of your labor, of course. Pinning our hopes on a pitiful, weak-minded human that you fancy for some nonsensical reason? Really, Athena, you are unfit to be a warrior goddess. There is no place for sentimentality in war.”
“Laugh all you want, ‘dear brother.’ There’s still time.”
“Ah, but that’s where you’re wrong. Father Zeus grew tired of waiting and has authorized Project Kratisto to proceed.”
“He wouldn’t! He promised…”
“He has indulged you long enough already! You have failed. The stakes are too high to entrust to this pathetic worm.”
“I’m going to speak to Father about this.”
“Oh, be my guest. He’s the one who sent me down to tell you this. Normally, I would gloat longer, but there is still much work to do on Kratisto. I’ll leave you to wallowing in you misery. Enjoy.” And with that, Ares’ smug face faded to nothingness.
I collapsed in the chair and sighed. Kratisto…“the strongest.” I shuddered as details of the plan flooded my mind. We cannot let this abomination be realized!
“Please, Phil… pull through!”
